What Is Local SEO?

Local SEO is how a business that serves an area gets found when people nearby search: the Google map pack, the local results under it, and searches like “electrician near me” or “family lawyer in Parramatta”. For anyone who serves a geographic area, local search is not one channel among several. It is usually the whole thing.

Where Local Search Is Won

Three things, roughly in order:

  1. Your Google Business Profile: categories, services, service areas, photos, posts and reviews.
  2. Consistent business details (name, address and phone number) across every directory and citation.
  3. Pages on your site that genuinely relate to the areas you serve.

Most businesses have a profile they filled in once and never touched, details that differ across five directories, and either no location pages or forty identical ones.

Google Business Profile Optimisation

For most local businesses the profile is the single highest-leverage asset and the most neglected. I correct the categories, fill out services and products, set the right service areas, and make sure every detail matches the website.

In this Melbourne case study, profile work and a proper location structure took a business from page two to the top three across its whole service area in five months.

Location Pages And The Suburb Page Problem

This is where most local SEO goes wrong. Generating a page for every suburb in a fifty-kilometre radius is easy, which is exactly why it is the default recommendation. A page that says nothing a generic page could not say is a thin page, and a site full of them dilutes everything else.

I build a proper hierarchy instead: region, then area, then the suburbs that genuinely matter, with each page earning its place.

Reviews And Citations

The review process matters more than the tooling. If asking for a review depends on somebody remembering at the end of a job, it will not happen consistently, so I help you build it into the job flow. Citations are cleaned up so every listing says the same thing.

Local SEO Results You Can See

I track rankings on a grid across your whole service area, not one keyword from one spot. You can drag through real before and after grids from Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Balmain and the Gold Coast.

Local SEO sits naturally with on-page SEO and off-page SEO, and it matters most for electricians and plumbers, dental practices and home service businesses.

How My Local SEO Process Works

  1. 01

    Establish the real service area

Where the work comes from now, where you want it to come from, and what is realistic given the competition.

  2. 02

    Fix the profile

Categories, services, hours, attributes, photos. The profile is often the single highest-leverage asset and usually the most neglected.

  3. 03

    Build the page structure

A tier of pages that covers the area without spawning fifty near-identical suburb pages.

  4. 04

    Citations and reviews

Consistent details everywhere you are listed, and a review process that does not rely on remembering to ask.

Local SEO FAQ

Local SEO Questions, Answered

Not covered here? Ask me directly .

What is local SEO and how is it different from regular SEO?

Local SEO focuses on searches with local intent, where Google shows the map pack and nearby businesses. It leans heavily on your Google Business Profile, reviews and location signals, while regular SEO is about ranking pages for searches that are not tied to a place.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Profile fixes can move map rankings within weeks. Building a location structure, citations and reviews usually takes a few months to show across a whole service area. The Melbourne case study on this site reached the top three across its grid in five months.

Should I have a page for every suburb?

Usually not. A page for every suburb, each the same with the name swapped, is a thin content problem dressed up as a local strategy. Fewer pages that say something true about each area, supported by a clear hierarchy, rank better.

My Google Business Profile details do not match my website. Does that matter?

Yes. An inconsistent name, address or phone number is one of the most common and most damaging local SEO problems, and one of the quickest to fix. The free SEO audit checks it.

Can you help a business with multiple locations?

Yes. Multiple locations need separate profiles, distinct location pages and a clear hierarchy, so the locations support each other instead of competing.

Do I need a physical address to rank in the map pack?

Not always. Service-area businesses can hide their address and still rank, as long as the profile is set up correctly for that. I check which setup suits your business.
